How is Democracy relevant in Africa today?

Would Democracy work as well in Africa for economic growth in today's world?

With ongoing issues in the world especially in Africa ranging from the most recent Russian airline attack, I asked myself this question about countries in Africa; does democracy affect positively to a country's economic development? Africa as a continent, has its image tarnished by political upheavals, mostly by coup d'états which escalate to deadly Civil wars and in the long run affects the country's economic development with countries like Cote D'ivoire, Ghana and most recently Guinea and Burkina Faso suffering from this issue. Democracy as a system of governance has in its nature the act of causing political instability in a peaceful manner where governments are changed in a time frame where the ruling government can lose power to the opposition power especially with the recent Nigerian election where the opposition party won. One must know that every political party has its own ideology which they uphold ranging from Neo- Socialism to Capitalism and this somehow affect the economic situation of countries especially in Africa. For example, Ghana since she embraced Democracy in 1990 has been ruled by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with the former pursuing Social Democracy and the latter, Liberal Democracy and how the economy of Ghana has been affected by these frequent changes in governments.

In contrast, we have some countries in Africa who have enjoyed political stability for some time now and how there is a sharp contrast in their economic growth with examples like South Africa which has been ruled by the dominant African National Congress (ANC) Post - Apartheid and how they are the most developed country in Africa compared to Tanzania who has recently maintained their ruling party the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and how poor the country is in relation to the World Bank's standards. In sum, having a critical look at the above examples of the economic standings of certain countries in Africa, can it be said that the peaceful political instability caused by democracy is the cause of economic disasters in Africa or is there more to Africa's economic woes?
